(Optional: The deserts in default generation are mostly limited to small splotches of sand. It is my recommendation to use Beta 1.8 generation, but if you insist, then I suggest large biomes, which feels more normal) Customize > World Preset > Beta Custom > Beta Large Biomes. > 4.
