Everything, ranging from crafting to taming, gives you xp!
Use /gamerule BreakingBlocksGivesXp to get a little bit of xp for breaking blocks
Current new ways of getting xp:
- Breaking blocks (toggleable) - Using Bonemeal - Crafting - Smelting - Landing critical hits - Sleeping - Trees growing - Fishing - Taming mobs - Using a totem - Being struck by lightning - Blocking - Entering the end - New cleric trades - Anchievements - Entering the nether for the first time

- Lapis set - each piece gives xp over time
Other: - Compact xp - A throwable xp orb made from 9 xp bottles - Liquid xp - Standing in this will summon xp orbs
