Mojang has released the first snapshot for Minecraft 26.3, introducing a collection of new blocks, structures, plants, and world-generation features. While the update does not focus on a single headline mechanic, it significantly expands exploration across the Overworld and introduces several long-requested decorative options for builders.
The most notable addition is the new Motley Forest biome, a colorful environment filled with unique vegetation and an entirely new tree species. Alongside it, players can discover abandoned camps scattered throughout the world, experiment with wool slabs and stairs, and interact with new plants that add more variety to Minecraft’s natural landscapes.
The snapshot also includes a handful of smaller gameplay adjustments and quality-of-life improvements, making version 26.3 one of the most content-rich experimental builds released in recent months.
Motley Forest Introduces New Trees, Plants, and Exploration Opportunities
The centerpiece of Snapshot 26.3 is undoubtedly the Motley Forest biome. Designed to stand out from Minecraft’s existing woodland environments, the biome features vibrant colors, distinctive vegetation, and a more varied atmosphere than traditional forests.
At the heart of the biome is the Poplar tree, a completely new wood type added to the game. Unlike most tree species, Poplars can generate with three different foliage color variations. Interestingly, players only need a single type of sapling to grow them. When a Poplar matures, the game randomly selects one of the available leaf colors, making each tree slightly different from the last.
This randomization system creates forests that appear more natural and visually diverse without requiring multiple sapling variants. Builders may also find the mechanic useful when creating parks, gardens, and custom landscapes.
Players who struggle to find a Motley Forest can obtain Poplar saplings from Wandering Traders. This provides an alternative method of accessing the new tree type without needing to travel long distances in search of the biome.
The biome also introduces the Red Bush, a decorative plant exclusive to Motley Forests. Although simple in design, it helps distinguish the biome from other wooded regions and contributes to its colorful appearance.
Another new addition is the Shelf Fungus, a mushroom-like plant that naturally appears on both standing and fallen Poplar trees. Much like Poplar saplings, Shelf Fungus can also be purchased from Wandering Traders.

New Structures, Building Blocks, and Gameplay Changes
Snapshot 26.3 isn’t limited to biome content. Mojang has also introduced several additions aimed at exploration and construction.
One of the most interesting new features is the arrival of Abandoned Camps. These structures can now generate across a wide range of Overworld biomes, giving explorers another point of interest to discover during their adventures.
While relatively small compared to villages or ancient cities, abandoned camps help make the world feel more lived-in. Their scattered appearance suggests traces of past travelers and creates additional storytelling opportunities within Minecraft’s procedurally generated landscapes.
Builders are also receiving new tools in the form of Wool Slabs and Wool Stairs. For years, players have requested more wool-based building options, especially for creating furniture, tents, cushions, rooftops, and decorative interiors.
Until now, wool could only be used as a full block, often limiting design possibilities. The introduction of slabs and stairs dramatically expands the block’s versatility, allowing players to create smoother shapes and more detailed structures without relying on alternative materials. The update also includes a visual change affecting spruce trees. Mojang has removed falling leaf particles from spruce foliage. While subtle, this adjustment helps differentiate spruce forests from other wooded biomes and slightly reduces visual clutter in certain environments.
Food crafting has also become more flexible. Players can now create both Mushroom Stew and Suspicious Stew using any combination of two mushrooms rather than being restricted to specific mushroom pairings. This change simplifies the crafting process and makes stew recipes more intuitive. It also encourages players to experiment with the growing variety of fungi available throughout the game.
Taken together, the features introduced in Snapshot 26.3 reveal Mojang’s continued focus on expanding environmental diversity, improving building options, and enriching exploration. While the update may not contain a single game-changing mechanic, it delivers a wide range of additions that collectively make the Overworld feel more dynamic, colorful, and alive.
